Use Delete Items from the hamburger menu to remove local content that you no longer need. Deletion is separate from Backup/Restore.
To remove only a document bookmark, highlight, tag occurrence, or comment, use that entry’s Delete icon in the document toolbar’s Annotations & Structure-Legal Indexes panel. Accepted generated index entries are read-only in this panel; review or dismiss them from the Structure/AI Legal index panel. Deleting a Highlight removes the grouped Highlighter ink for that highlighted section. To temporarily hide its page mark, use Hide annotation marks. See Document annotation visibility and deletion; those actions do not require deleting the document file.
For content inside Canvas/PenPad, use Delete node, Delete Arrow, ink erasing, or Delete Group. These remove content from the active file. Ungroup keeps the contents and removes their grouping; Delete Items removes the selected Canvas/PenPad file itself.

What Delete Items can remove
Delete Items can cover:
- Cases.
- Documents and images.
- Audio recordings.
- Canvas/PenPad files.
- Global Library material.
Select the required scope and item carefully, review the confirmation message, and delete only when you are certain that the correct local item is selected.
Select items and confirm deletion
- Open Delete Items and choose a Case, Global Lib., or a library subhead in the dialog’s left-hand list.
- Click or tap each file row or checkbox in the right-hand list to select it. Select it again to clear the checkbox.
- You can choose items from several locations before deleting; changing the displayed location keeps earlier selections. Check the total in Delete Selected (n).
- Select Delete Selected, then review Confirm deletion. Choose Delete to continue or Cancel to return to the selection.
- Wait for the result and refreshed item list, then select Close.
The Delete Selected button is disabled when nothing is selected. If a Case or user-created library subhead still contains files, only its contents are offered for deletion. After those files are removed, its empty container becomes selectable. The Global Lib. root and built-in library subheads cannot be deleted.

Delete a document, recording, or Canvas/PenPad file
Before deleting a file:
- Check that it is not needed for a draft, evidence trail, or active review.
- Check whether a Canvas/PenPad source link depends on it. Deleting a source document can leave a link without its original source passage.
- Create a backup if the file may be needed later.
- Open Delete Items, choose the correct location and file, and confirm the deletion.
Deleting the last Canvas/PenPad file does not prevent later Canvas work. When Copy to Canvas next needs a destination for that Case, CogniVenue-Legal can create and open the default ThoughtMap_1.canvas.
Delete a Case
To delete a Case completely, first delete all documents, Canvas files, PenPad files, recordings, and other items inside it. Then use Delete Items to delete the empty Case.
Deleting a Case does not restore, increase, or add to the account’s Case creation allowance. Each Case creation consumes allowance even if that Case is later deleted.

For a custom Global Library subhead, remove all its files, including Canvas/PenPad files, before deleting the empty subhead. See Delete library items.
Safe deletion checklist
Before deleting:
- Create a backup.
- Confirm the Case, Global Library location, and file name.
- Check Canvas/PenPad source links, drafts, annotations, and evidence trails that may depend on the item.
- Confirm that any OCR, indexing, or export work you need has finished.
- Delete only after review.
Deletion is local and should be treated as permanent unless you have a compatible backup. Signing out does not delete local content, and deleting a Case does not return its creation allowance.
