Help topicsGlobal Lib.

Global Lib. is the shared library for reusable judgments, statutes, templates, research, and other reference material. Its documents can support work in different Cases without uploading a separate copy into each matter.

Opening a Global Library document keeps the currently open Canvas/PenPad selected. You can read library material in the document viewer and use Copy to Canvas to add it to that receiving workspace. A library canvas becomes the destination only when you explicitly open it, and it stays the destination until another Canvas/PenPad is explicitly opened.

Browse the root and subheads

In the left pane, select the Global Lib. heading to browse the library root, or select a subhead beneath it. The built-in subheads are:

  • High Court Judgments.
  • Supreme Court Judgments.
  • Bare Acts.
  • Landmark Judgments.
  • Templates.
  • Research Material.

The active location appears above its Documents list. The root and each subhead have separate document and Canvas/PenPad lists: selecting the root does not combine the contents of all subheads. Select the location where a file was uploaded to find it.

Selecting a library location brings up its browsing view while keeping the current Canvas/PenPad selected. If no center document is open, a library document opens in the center pane. If a center document remains open, the library location is browsed without changing the pinned document context, and its documents open or replace the right-pane document. Selecting an already open document focuses its existing pane.

Documents remains available while browsing the library. Issues, Facts, Legal Diary, Evidence, Tasks/To-dos, Drafts, Authorities, and Research are Case sections and are muted here. The Research Material library subhead is a place to store files; it is separate from a Case’s Research section.

Upload and manage library files

  1. Select Global Lib. or the required subhead in the left pane.
  2. Check the location shown in the center pane and on the upload button, such as Upload to Global Lib. or Upload to Bare Acts.
  3. Select that upload button and choose one or more supported files, including PDFs, images, DOCX, TXT/TEXT, Markdown, RTF, ODT, HTML/HTM, EML/MSG email, ICS/VCS calendar, or CSV files. Unsupported or unreadable selections are skipped and named in the upload summary.
  4. If a duplicate is reported, review the existing document and the overwrite choice before continuing.
  5. Watch the center-pane document list for Processing while OCR or text extraction runs. Search and related suggestions become available as the relevant processing finishes.

The upload goes into the library location shown on the button even when the right pane is displaying a Case canvas. Opening that canvas does not change where the library upload is stored.

The center-pane list also shows this location’s Canvas/PenPad files and recordings. Click or tap a row/name to select it for Rename; use its right-hand Open or Play audio icon to open it. Recordings are not included in the left-pane document browser. To make a recording in a library location, select the location before using Rec audio, and check the destination in its confirmation dialog. See Center-pane file browsing.

Library documents use the same document viewer, search, annotation tools, Structure index, and AI Legal index as Case documents. In a view with two documents, click or tap the intended document pane first so these controls follow the correct document.

  • Use Search Text/Tags to find text and annotation tags after extraction or OCR finishes.
  • Use Structure or AI Legal, Filter index, grouping, and the index arrows to locate source passages. An index item’s menu includes Bookmark source, Tag source, and Comment on source.
  • Click or tap Bookmarks or Comments beneath the active location to cycle through the focused document’s saved locations.
  • Select a tag name, then use Tags to move through occurrences of that tag in the focused document.

These annotations and indexes belong to the source document. They do not become a combined index of every file in the library or subhead. Review the source passage before relying on an AI Legal entry.

Copy library material to a Case canvas

At startup, the default or last active Case opens with its default or last-open Canvas/PenPad; on first use, its default canvas is ThoughtMap_1.canvas. After that, whichever Canvas/PenPad you explicitly open remains the receiving workspace until another Canvas/PenPad is explicitly opened. If a canvas needs to be recreated after the last file was deleted, the app can prepare that default again.

To use a shared reference in a matter’s canvas:

  1. Open the destination Case’s intended Canvas/PenPad if it is not already the receiving workspace.
  2. Select Global Lib. or a subhead, then open the source document from its left-pane Documents list. The open Canvas/PenPad remains the destination.
  3. Select text in the document, or select a page area when using an image or scanned PDF.
  4. Choose Copy to Canvas. The selection becomes a source-linked node in the current canvas; the original document stays in its library location.
  5. Use the copied node’s source link to return to the document passage when reviewing the note.

For example, open a matter’s ThoughtMap_1.canvas, browse Supreme Court Judgments, open a judgment, and copy a useful passage into the matter’s canvas. Merely opening the judgment does not switch you to that subhead’s default canvas.

If another document is temporarily occupying the right pane, Copy to Canvas brings the receiving canvas back into view. Check the receiving Canvas/PenPad before copying if you have explicitly opened a library canvas during the session; it then becomes the current destination. Open the intended Case Canvas/PenPad again when you want it to receive later copies.

Copied text, image, and page-area nodes support the same ink auto-grouping as other Canvas/PenPad items. Write inside or close to the copied node during an annotation session, then turn annotation mode off to group that fresh ink with the node.

Open a Global Library canvas explicitly

The library root and each subhead can have their own Canvas/PenPad files, including a default ThoughtMap_1.canvas. Their files appear in the Documents list for that location, but browsing library documents does not automatically display a library canvas in place of the current Case’s canvas.

  1. Select Global Lib. or the desired subhead.
  2. In its left-pane Documents list, click or tap the canvas entry, normally titled ThoughtMap_1, or another saved Canvas/PenPad file.
  3. That library file opens in the right pane and becomes the destination for subsequent Copy to Canvas actions.

The library root, each subhead, and each Case own separate canvases even when their default files share the name ThoughtMap_1.canvas. Select the file under the intended location. Opening any Case, Global Library, or subhead Canvas/PenPad makes that file the receiving workspace until another one is explicitly opened.

Add a library subhead

Use a custom subhead when you need another collection, such as a practice area or a reusable research pack.

  1. Select the + beside Global Lib. in the left pane.
  2. In New Global Library Sub-Head, enter a Sub-head name and select Add.
  3. Select the new subhead before uploading files into it.

Names must be non-empty and distinct from existing subheads; changing capitalization alone does not create a different name. Custom subheads are saved locally and restored when the app is reopened.

Creating a subhead requires a verified eligible account. The required first paid 5-pack enables unlimited subhead creation, and lifetime-unlimited accounts are also eligible. Free accounts can use existing library material and subheads without a time-bound use limitation, but cannot create new subheads. If account access prevents creation, the app explains the restriction.

Find library passages across documents

Use Ask Docs with the Global Lib. scope to search indexed passages across the root and subheads. Choose Everything to include Cases as well. Open a source result to review the matching passage; results depend on completed extraction and indexing.

Use Compare Passages to choose two to four documents from Cases, the Global Library root, or subheads for comparative review.

Related topics: Ask Docs, Compare Passages.

Delete library items

Use Delete Items from the hamburger menu and choose the correct library location and files. Source links in a Case canvas can depend on a library document, so check those links before deleting the source.

Only an empty user-created subhead can be deleted. Remove its documents, recordings, and Canvas/PenPad files first, including a default canvas if present. The Global Lib. root and built-in subheads cannot be deleted.
